Blenheim, known as Te Waiharakeke in te reo Māori, is the main town of Marlborough on New Zealand’s South Island, set among the Wairau Valley’s vineyards, rivers, and mountain ranges. The town sits between the Taylor and Ōpaoa Rivers and serves as the regional centre for a landscape strongly associated with wine production. Central Blenheim contains cafés, galleries, shops, and heritage buildings, while the Taylor River Reserve provides walking and cycling paths through the town. More than 30 wineries lie within easy reach, making the surrounding countryside an important part of Blenheim’s identity.

The area has deep Māori connections, with the lower Wairau known as Te Waiharakeke, referring to the flax that once grew across its wetlands. The Ōpaoa River was an important source of food and a transport route for Māori communities, while the nearby Te Pokohiwi-o-Kupe/Wairau Bar contains significant archaeological evidence of early Polynesian settlement in Aotearoa. European settlement brought farming and river transport, and Blenheim developed as the principal town of Marlborough. Local heritage can be explored at Marlborough Museum and Brayshaw Heritage Park.

Blenheim is surrounded by a landscape shaped by vineyards, braided rivers, farmland, and the mountains of the Marlborough region. The Wither Hills Farm Park offers walking and mountain-bike tracks with views across the Wairau Valley, while the Taylor River provides an accessible route through the town. The Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre presents aircraft and large-scale displays focused on the two world wars, including collections associated with filmmaker Peter Jackson. Beyond Blenheim, the Wairau Valley leads toward the Marlborough Sounds and the coastal landscapes around Cloudy Bay.

Wine is central to Blenheim’s food culture, with Marlborough particularly associated with Sauvignon Blanc as well as Pinot Noir, aromatic varieties, and sparkling wines. Local produce includes cherries, asparagus, olives, salmon, oysters, and Greenshell mussels from the wider Marlborough region. The Sunday Marlborough Farmers’ Market brings growers and producers together at the A&P Showgrounds, while cellar doors throughout the surrounding vineyards offer tastings and regional food. Blenheim’s combination of agricultural production, wine heritage, Māori history, and river landscapes gives the town a distinctive place in the South Island’s cultural and culinary geography.
