Brooklyn is New York City’s largest borough by population and occupies the western end of Long Island, with a long waterfront facing Manhattan, New York Harbor, and the East River. Its neighborhoods range from the historic streets of Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill to the row houses of Park Slope, the industrial waterfront of Red Hook, and the busy commercial districts of Flatbush and Sunset Park. Brooklyn is also known for its parks, beaches, cultural institutions, and independent businesses. The Brooklyn Bridge, Prospect Park, Coney Island, and the Brooklyn Museum are among its best-known landmarks.

Brooklyn’s identity reflects Indigenous, Dutch, Caribbean, European, Latin American, Asian, and other cultural influences. The area was home to Lenape communities before Dutch settlement, and Brooklyn later developed as an independent city with farms, waterfront industries, shipbuilding, and busy ferry connections to Manhattan. Brooklyn Borough Hall remains an important reminder of that civic history. Neighborhood traditions are especially visible through churches, cultural centers, community festivals, street markets, and locally established businesses. The borough’s many immigrant communities have helped shape its languages, religious institutions, music, arts, and everyday food traditions.

Brooklyn offers a wide range of landscapes and attractions within a densely developed urban setting. Prospect Park provides broad lawns, wooded paths, a lake, and recreational facilities, while the Brooklyn Botanic Garden contains specialized plant collections beside the Brooklyn Museum. Along the waterfront, Brooklyn Bridge Park extends from DUMBO toward Brooklyn Heights with lawns, piers, playgrounds, and views across the East River. Coney Island combines a sandy beach and boardwalk with Luna Park and the New York Aquarium. Other notable places include Green-Wood Cemetery, the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and the elevated High Line-style walking route of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway.

Brooklyn’s food culture is closely tied to its neighborhood diversity, with traditions ranging from Jewish delis and Italian bakeries to Caribbean restaurants, Mexican taquerias, Chinese markets, Middle Eastern cafés, and South Asian kitchens. Pizza and bagels are strongly associated with the borough, while neighborhoods such as Sunset Park are known for Chinese and Mexican food. Brooklyn also has a long connection to brewing, with historic brewery districts in northern neighborhoods and a growing collection of small producers. The borough’s distinctive character can also be seen in its brownstone architecture, community gardens, independent bookstores, music venues, and neighborhood businesses that give individual districts their own identities.

Buffalo
Buffalo, the second-largest city in New York State, sits at the eastern end of Lake Erie where the Niagara River begins its journey toward Niagara Falls.
