Drakensberg in Lesotho forms part of the country’s dramatic highland landscape, where steep mountains, deep valleys, and high plateaus dominate the scenery. The range is especially prominent in the eastern part of Lesotho, with peaks rising above broad upland areas and remote settlements. The Maloti Mountains, as they are known within Lesotho, are closely linked to the country’s geography and way of life. Much of the highland terrain is covered by grassland, while rivers and streams cut through the valleys. The region provides some of Lesotho’s most distinctive mountain scenery and high-altitude landscapes.
The mountains have long been closely connected with Basotho culture and rural life. Traditional villages are scattered across valleys and slopes, where livestock herding and small-scale farming remain important activities. The distinctive rondavel, a round stone or brick dwelling often topped with a thatched roof, is a familiar feature of the highlands. The landscape also contains numerous examples of San rock art, reflecting a much older human presence in the mountains. Local communities continue to use traditional knowledge suited to the challenging highland environment, particularly in relation to livestock, seasonal weather, and mountain travel.
One of the best-known areas is the Maletsunyane Falls region near Semonkong, where the Maletsunyane River drops from a high basalt cliff into a narrow gorge. The surrounding mountains provide opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, and exploring remote valleys. The Drakensberg escarpment also forms a natural boundary with South Africa, and several mountain passes connect settlements across the highlands. Sehlabathebe National Park, part of the Maloti-Drakensberg Transboundary World Heritage property, protects rugged sandstone formations, alpine grasslands, wetlands, and archaeological sites. Its landscape includes unusual rock shapes, caves, and high-altitude viewpoints.
The highlands are known for locally produced foods based on maize, sorghum, beans, and dairy products, while traditional Basotho dishes can be encountered in villages and lodges. The Basotho blanket is another distinctive cultural feature, widely worn as protection against the cold mountain climate and recognized as an important symbol of national identity. Winter conditions can bring snow to the highest elevations, creating a marked contrast with the lower valleys. Together, the mountains, rock art, traditional settlements, livestock culture, and changing alpine weather give the Lesotho Drakensberg a strong sense of place.
