Cam Ranh is a coastal city in Khánh Hòa Province in south-central Vietnam, located around a sheltered bay along the South China Sea. The area is known for its long coastline, sandy beaches, fishing communities, and dry coastal climate. Cam Ranh Bay forms a deep natural harbor surrounded by hills and is an important maritime area. The city also provides access to Bình Ba Island and nearby coastal landscapes. Compared with the larger tourism center of Nha Trang, Cam Ranh has a more dispersed urban landscape, with residential areas, fishing villages, agricultural land, and developing coastal districts.

Cam Ranh's local identity is closely connected to fishing and maritime life. Fishing boats, seafood markets, and aquaculture areas are common along the coast and around the bay. The wider Khánh Hòa region has a strong Vietnamese coastal culture shaped by fishing, seafood production, and religious traditions. Small temples and communal houses serve local communities, while the nearby Cham heritage of south-central Vietnam provides additional cultural context. The region is also known for traditional fish sauce production, which uses locally sourced anchovies and forms an important part of coastal food traditions in Vietnam.

Cam Ranh Bay is the area's most prominent geographic feature, with calm waters and hills surrounding its deep inlet. Bình Ba Island, located within the bay, is known for beaches, rocky coastlines, fishing villages, and coral-rich waters. Nearby Bình Hưng Island and Bình Tiên Beach provide additional coastal scenery, with clear water, rocky headlands, and sandy shorelines. The wider area around Cam Ranh contains dry hills and semi-arid vegetation, giving parts of the coastline a noticeably different landscape from the wetter mountain regions farther north. The city is also close to Núi Chúa National Park and Vĩnh Hy Bay.

Seafood is central to Cam Ranh's cuisine, with lobster, crab, squid, shrimp, oysters, and locally caught fish commonly served in restaurants and coastal markets. Bình Ba Island is particularly associated with lobster farming, and lobster dishes are a well-known local specialty. Bánh căn, small rice-flour cakes cooked in round molds and often topped with seafood, is another dish associated with the Khánh Hòa region. Fish sauce is widely used in local cooking, adding a strong savory element to seafood and rice dishes. Cam Ranh's combination of a natural harbor, fishing traditions, island communities, and seafood culture reflects its close relationship with the surrounding sea.
